CAERAU PRIMARY SCHOOL

Our new topic is Nature detectives

Picture
Here you will find all the fun we have been getting up to during this topic.

During this topic we will be exploring the great outdoors, finding out how we can help the environment and researching all creatures great and small.

Animal music

We listened to some animal related poems and created music to accompany them.  We chose different instruments that we felt related to the sound of each animal.
We used J2 Databases to compare facts about different insects and bugs

CAMOUFLAGE art

We each chose a different animal to create and an area of the outdoors to camouflage it in.  We thought carefully about the colours we needed to mix to make the animal camouflage perfectly into the chosen area.  Take a look and see if you can find our creations merged into the beautiful outdoors.

Topic

MAD SCIENTIST

We are so excited to announce that our new topic is Mad Scientist.  We will become scientists taking part in lots of tests and experiments.  We will be looking into different inventions that have been created over the years and how they have evolved over time.

At the start of the topic we looked at the Areas of Learning and brainstormed what activities we would like to do linked to each one. Click the images below to take a closer look.

Check out our first experiment with Coke and Mentos below. We recorded how many Mentos we put in each bottle and then measured what was left in each bottle when we returned to class.  It was tricky getting all of the Mentos to go into the bottle before it exploded. We are going to be trying this experiment again with different materials to see if it changes the results.
SCIENCE IN THE ART
We looked at how we could make the range of colours in a colour wheel just by mixing the primary colours:-red, blue and yellow. Although we all used the same colours everyone's colour wheels looked slightly different.  We found out that this was because we were all adding our own different measurements of the paint

Magnetism
We have been investigating  magnetism. We made predictions of what materials would be magnetic or not.  We tested wood, zinc, steel, plastic and iron fillings.  Our favourite material was iron fillings, we loved how it moved and became spiky.

As part of celebrating British Science Week we took part in lots of different experiments.
check out what fun we got up to below!!

Skittles rainbow experiment

We found this the quickest and easiest of the experiments to do.  We placed the skittles in a circle on the plate and then added warm water to the middle of the plate.  We were shocked how quickly the water absorbed the colouring from the skittles and how it didn’t mix when it travelled to the middle of the plate.  When we moved the plate or stirred the water the rainbow disappeared and it became a yucky brown mess.  The best part was there were lots of left over skittles that didn’t get used so we got to eat them!!

Colour run

Alive and kicking

Our topic for the Autumn-term is titled "Alive and Kicking" learning about all of the human body, organ functions and the senses.

So far, we have investigated the:
· Digestive system (by recreating one using a pair of tights, orange juice, biscuits and yoghurt - yuck!)
· The circulatory system by making models of the human heart and measuring our pulse rates after different exercises,
· The skeleton by recreating skeletons out of pasta,
· The brain - by making brain helmets.
· The heart - exploring the heart chambers on Minecraft!
· Exploring our five senses with different scientific experiments.

We are having lots of fun learning about the human body!!
