WORLD BOOK DAY
Year 5 had great fun celebrating World Book Day this year. We wore pyjamas and we chose our favourite book from the school library, to then read to children in Year 1.

the mad scientist
Our Spring Term topic was 'The Mad Scientist'. As part of this topic we focused lots on experiments where we had opportunity to make predictions, carry out the experimental process and to discuss our results. We investigated famous inventors and we learnt about forces and magnets. We have had lots of fun with numerous practical, hands-on, engaging tasks!
At the beginning of our topic we drew what we thought a Mad Scientist would look like. We then developed our ideas and created a 3D model of a Mad Scientist, using clay.
Click on the pictures below to look at images from our Mentos Experiment! We worked in groups to complete the investigation. We used different amounts of Mentos in each bottle and then predicted how high the coke would explode! We use a metre ruler to calculate the height of each explosion and then we checked our predictions to see if we were correct!
Well-being week
Year 5 engaged well with our whole-school approach to 'Well-Being Week'. For one of our activities, we sat in a circle and chose a friend we wanted to compliment. Once we had said something nice to that friend, we then threw the wool at them, for them to do the same to another friend. In the end the whole circle looked like a huge spider web! Each string showed each of the compliments that had been given, it was so lovely to see!
Remembrance day
We have recently celebrated Remembrance Day. We learned about the meanings of the different coloured poppies. We worked in groups to make collaborative poppy paintings. We also made our own poppies which we put in the school ground as part of our 2 minute silence.
Alive and Kicking
As part of our Autumn Term we found out all about the human body as part of our ‘Alive and Kicking’ topic.
We had opportunity to investigate the: · Digestive system (by recreating one using a pair of tights, orange juice, biscuits and yoghurt - yuck!) · The circulatory system (by making models of the human heart and measuring our pulse rates after different exercises), · The skeleton by recreating skeletons out of pasta, · The brain - by making brain helmets.
We have been lucky to have been swimming for 1 week before half term - all children have improved their confidence in the water and most have improved their swimming.
We played in the Keith Grice rugby festival, joining over 300 children at Porthcawl to play. We played against Mynydd Cynffig, Cwmfelin, St. Mary and St Patrick’s, Nottage, Croesty and Maes Y Haul. We didn’t win every game but played well in each one! We are hoping to play more sports soon—rugby, netball and football against some of the schools in our valley.
Every Tuesday, Year 5 children take part in Goalgetters during school time to practice our football skills.
For the first time in a long time - we shall be hosting our famous Christmas concert this year - Miss D from Superstars has cast the main parts and those people are now hard at work rehearsing ready for the big days ahead!
